The Goldsmiths’ Centre’s Precious Metal Grant is an annual competition which provides 750 of precious metal bullion to a select group of Jewellery and Silversmithing students across the UK, providing the opportunity to translate their designs into precious metal.  This week, The Goldsmiths’ Centre announced the eleven winners of its prestigious Goldsmiths’ Precious Metal Grant competition. New Designers: winners of the Goldsmiths’ Company awards announced

New Designers, a platform promoting new creative talent from graduates, has announced the 2020 recipients of the Goldsmiths’ Company awards for jewellery and silversmithing. The winners are jeweller Coco Liang from Birmingham City University and silversmith Yitong Shang from the Glasgow School of Art. This year, the competition was held digitally with students encouraged to submit design ideas online. Centred on the theme of ‘community’, competition submissions needed to be ‘highly creative, thought-provoking, and capable of triggering discussion and debate’. This year's winners of the Amberif Design Award have been announced. The last remaining professional fore-edge painter  Martin Frost  has been awarded Maker of the Year by the Heritage Crafts Association at its Textures of Craft conference on 6 th  May. BATF announces winner Jubilee silverware competition

BATF are delighted to announce Tim Lukes of Lukes & Co as the winner of its silverware competition to commemorate Her Majesty The Queen's Platinum Jubilee in June 2022. Launching the competition last December, the BATF invited submissions from UK-based designers and silversmiths based on the theme of ‘plant a tree for the Jubilee’. The BATF received a wonderful variety of pieces, and the judging panel remarked about the high-quality of entries. The City of Glasgow College recently ran a Jewellery Design competition for Secondary Schools in Scotland during Lockdown with the theme  #climatemergency  and received over 300 entries. The competition challenged young people to design a pendant that reflects the world’s climate emergency. Mirin Scott from Carluke High School has won the S1-S3 category for her design which highlighted bees becoming endangered. Three second year students studying for a Higher National Diploma in Jewellery and Silversmithing at the Birmingham City University's School of Jewellery have been shortlisted as finalists in an annual design competition run by Birmingham-based casting house, 3D printing and bespoke manufacturing company Weston Beamor. A university student from the University of Dundee has won the Ingle & Rhode 2017 Fairtrade Gold Design Awards. A Birmingham City University [BCU] horology [the study of watches and clocks] student was treated to a trip to the historical home of Swiss watchmaking, after winning a major competition sponsored by British watch retail giants Christopher Ward. The  City of Glasgow College  ran a competition during Lockdown linked to their HND Jewellery students coursework to design a brooch for the First Minister  Nicola Sturgeon  to wear to COP26. It was to be based on rising sea levels as an effect of Climate Change. Craft Emergency have selected eleven makers for Craft Emergency 2016, a biennial open submission group exhibition featuring recent work in diverse media. The main aim of the competition is to champion contemporary craft by emerging makers from across the UK and beyond, increasing exposure for their work, and encouraging further professional development opportunities. This Autumn Benchpeg launched a competition open to Birmingham School of Jewellery students and alumni to design our annual Christmas Tree Decoration. We had some innovative, thoughtful and creative designs submitted in response to the quite constrained brief, but the winner selected by the Benchpeg team, was designed by Kate Dugmore. The design entitled ‘GeoGems’ has the illusion of shattered facets within a diamond form, which is both contemporary and challenging. Supreme Court judgment in FCA’s business interruption insurance test case

The Supreme Court has today delivered its judgment in the Financial Conduct Authority’s ( FCA )’s business interruption insurance test case.  The Supreme Court has substantially allowed the  FCA’s  appeal on behalf of policyholders. This completes the legal process for impacted policies and means that many thousands of policyholders will now have their claims for  coronavirus -related business interruption losses paid.  Sheldon Mills, Executive Director, Consumers and Competition at the  FCA , commented: 'Coronavirus  is causing substantial loss and distress to businesses and many are under immense financial strain to stay afloat. Birmingham City University's School of Jewellery student Kai-Blu Triassi has won the annual Weston Beamor  Live Project  with his contemporary geometric ‘Dyad’ engagement and wedding ring set design. Kai-Blu’s award was announced on the WB stand at this year’s Jewellery & Watch show.
